Press Release:
AIDS WALK COLLABORATIVE MURAL TO BE COMPLETED
Miami artist Xavier Cortada will facilitate the c ompletion of Miami's VOICES mural during AIDS Walk 2001 (to
benefit Care Resource, Inc.) at Bayfront Park, in downtown Miami, FL from 2 to 5 pm on
Saturday, February 24, 2001.
Participants will be asked to reflect on the impact AIDS has had on their lives and their
community. They will be able to write messages on small pieces of paper on-site (small
photos and two-dimensional artwork on paper measuring no larger than 3 x 4 inches will
also be accepted for incorporation to the mural). Cortada will take those messages and
glue them to the wood panels alongside messages already in place.
Cortada began painting the mural's five 8 x 4 wood panels during Fall 1996 with members of the agency's Client Advisory
Board, and then continued work on the 20-foot mural with input from participants of the 1997 AIDS Walk in South Beach, FL. The mural had never
been completed.
The mural will be dedicated during a sunset Candlelight vigil after walkers return from
their walk. The mural will be exhibited in various local schools and hospitals before
being donated to a local museum's permanent collection.
Cortada has created several similar AIDS art projects, including the official
collaborative murals for the XIIth and XIIIth International AIDS Conference in Geneva
(1998) and South Africa (2000). More information on the artist is available at
www.cortada.com. For more information on the project, please contact
Flavia Llizo at Care Resource, 305-667-9296 x23.
