GENESIS ARTISTS FOR AIDS
Artists, celebrities plan fund-raiser for
Genesis
Local artists and Spanish TV celebrities, including Miami’s own
Father Alberto Cutié, will team with talk-show host Cristina
Saralegui and her husband, Marcos Avila, to raise funds for
Genesis, the archdiocesan facility for homeless people living
with full-blown AIDS. Genesis Artists for AIDS, the group
chaired by Saralegui and Avila, will sponsor “A Night of Arts in
Bongos”, a dance and silent auction to be held Wednesday, May
26, at the Bongos Cuban Café in the American Airlines Arena. The
South Florida Health Foundation, the Knights of Malta and City
Furniture are major sponsors of the event.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, Miami-Dade
has the highest rate of people living with AIDS of any
metropolitan county in the nation, with nearly double the state
average. The epidemic has disproportionately affected homeless
people.
Genesis is an assisted living facility that provides a safe,
secure environment, along with medical and psychosocial
services, to homeless people with full-blown AIDS. Founded 16
years ago and located on the campus of Mercy Hospital in Miami,
Genesis House operates under the auspices of Catholic Charities
of the archdiocese. Nearly half of Genesis’ operating income
comes from private donations.
