It is
our choice how we decide to see our children in trouble. We may even decide to not see
them at all. It may be easier to put them away, out of sight, out of mind. To see these
children is to begin to realize the complexity of why they are, where they are.
The law protecting the images of these children also serves to project
us from an awareness of these kids. We know the images of delinquent, thug, mugger, thief,
convict or prisoner. But we are rarely given the chance to see into the faces of the youth
that we have labeled to put away.
This project has allowed us the rare opportunity to see these kids. It
is perhaps an opportunity to reconsider our choices. Are we safer putting them away? Are
we better? How many more of our children will inevitably follow?
