exhibits, 2 prestigious awards, & 1 Vatican invite for Cortada
Miami
artist Xavier Cortada will travel to the Vatican to participate in the Jubilee Day
for Artists on February 17 and 18th, 2000. Cortada will be one of only 600
artists and cultural figures invited by the Vatican from every country in the world to
reflect on this Jubilee Year.
On March 1st, Cortada will travel to Washington, D.C. to receive the prestigious "Millennium International Volunteer Award" from the U.S. Department of State & USA Today in recognition for his collaborative art projects on four continents during the past decade.
The Florida Association of Volunteer Agencies for Caribbean Action (FAVA/CA) is also honoring the artist in Tallahassee on February 23rd with the "Florida International Volunteer Corps 1999 Outstanding Achievement Award". (The artist will be in Rome and unable to receive the award in person.)
In addition, Cortada's schedule includes a February 4th closing reception of his "In the Capitol" exhibit in the Cabinet Meeting Room in Tallahassee. The solo exhibit, sponsored by the state's Division of Cultural Affairs, is one of three concurrently showing in the state. The other two are in Miami: "Imago, Imaginis", an exhibit on religious themes at the Art Atrium Gallery in St. Thomas University through March 8th; and "Compartiendo", a drug & violence prevention-oriented exhibit of earlier work at the ground level of Casa Grande (across from the Brickell Metrorail Station), sponsored by the East Little Havana Community Development Corporation. |
