MEDIA ALERT

Renowned Cuban Artist, Xavier Cortada, to be Honored at Sneak Preview Reception for Monumental "Wallscape" Mural

-- Commissioned Artwork Honors Miami’s Hispanic Community --

WHAT:
In a continuing effort to honor Hispanic artists by bringing their unique and cultural artwork to communities across the country, Heineken USA has commissioned a "wallscape" mural replicating a painting by internationally acclaimed Cuban artist, Xavier Cortada to be painted in Miami.

The landmark mural was designed to help instill pride in the community, by capturing the unique culture of the neighborhood through art. It is one of five such outdoor "wallscape" artworks on display in communities across the U.S., including one unveiled last year in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood designed by Dominican painter Guillo Pérez.

On Friday, July 12th, the doors are open at the Latin American Art Museum, as press will have the opportunity to meet Mr. Cortada and have a sneak peak at the mural, which will soon adorn the streets of Miami.

WHEN:
Friday, July 12th, 2002
6:30 - 10:30 P.M.

WHERE:
Latin American Art Museum
2206 SW 8th Street, Miami

WHO:
Xavier Cortada has exhibited his works in museums, galleries, and cultural venues around the world and has pioneered the use of the Internet in collaborative art making. The Miami-based Cuban-American artist, attorney, and activist has worked collaboratively with diverse groups across the United States, Latin America, Europe and Africa to create pro-social community murals and participant-driven art projects. Cortada's paintings have been shown in solo and group exhibits throughout the United States, Peru, and Bolivia. In November 1998, his work won the Grand Prize Best of Show in the "Arte + Arte" group exhibit at the Florida Museum of Hispanic and Latin American Art in Coral Gables, Florida.

Heineken USA Inc., the nation’s largest beer importer, has a long and proud history of celebrating and promoting Hispanic culture and diversity, including numerous initiatives throughout Miami and Southern Florida.
